It starts with handmade, heart-shaped paper notes exchanged (indiscriminately, democratically) in your kindergarten classroom. A few years later there are school socials, maybe something at an ice-skating arena, gaggles of girls gliding along the edge of the rink while the boys, barreling down, skid to a stop with a spray of ice.
